Physical Education Course Syllabus for Online PE
(Weight Training/ Adaptive PE/Sports Conditioning)
Ironwood Ridge HS 2020-2021
Coach Roy Stewart
Welcome IRHS PE students to the 2020-2021 school year! Although we are not beginning the year in the way we had hoped, we want to make sure to kick off the school year in a positive way. We know that eventually we will all be back together in person, and while I cannot wait for that day, I am so excited to have you in my class and see you every day even if it’s over Zoom.
If you have never taken my class, my name is Coach Roy Stewart and I teach Weight Training, Adaptive PE and Sports Conditioning here at this awesome place we call IRHS. On top of teaching a lot of Weight Training, I love coaching a lot of football right here at IRHS. I am so excited to get to know those of you who I have never met and equally thrilled to have many of you back!
This syllabus will serve as the guide for all three courses while we are online. Once we are back in-person, each class will receive a separate syllabus that will guide us through the rest of the school year.

Course description:
A comprehensive fitness specific course that focuses on the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of each student
*All course materials can be found in our Google Classroom
Course Objectives/Overview of Curriculum (based on the current Arizona State Standards):
- To participate in a variety of aerobic and muscular fitness activities during the regular school day.
- To apply heart rate information to personal fitness routines and plans.
- To work in the Heart Health Zone (120 to 180 BPM) while being mindful of perceived exertion.
- To use the Rate of Perceived Exertion Scale to analyze and reflect on effort and intensity during HIIT workouts.
- To develop a plan of action to help overcome challenges while staying on track to complete the 30-Day HIIT Challenge
- To choose a level of challenge during HIIT workouts that will help students experience the benefits of exercise as well as the success of completing the 30-day experience.
- To learn the technical biomechanics associated with each skill and exercise.
- To understand the value of physical fitness, health and nutrition as it relates to creating successful students and athletes.
- To have a conceptual understanding of health and fitness as it applies to my own personal well-being.
- To develop the skill of learning to collaborate with other students despite their differences.
Your duties in this class:
- Be on time, dressed out and ready to participate 100% each day.
- Demonstrate superior attitude, participation, teamwork and leadership even while remote.
- Remain organized while working remotely and complete tasks on time.
Overview of Remote Learning:
- Direct Engagement (2x a week). On these days you will check into class via zoom on time and we will have class during that hour. Rarely will we be on zoom the whole time. Sometimes we will be reviewing a health related article and breaking out into discussion groups or you will have a very short written assignment related to it. Other times you will complete your 30 Days of HITT workout on your own, and return to zoom for a post workout discussion or reflection.
- Google Classroom Learning (3x a week). On these days you will check into class at the beginning of the period for attendance on Zoom, and then will conduct the remainder of the period in the Google Classroom where you will have a journal/reflection that follows your daily HIIT workout.
Attendance Policy:
For the time being, all attendance will be taken on Zoom. Two days a week, class will be conducted on Zoom while the other three will entail a Zoom check in for attendance during the first 5-10 minutes of class with the remainder of class completed in the Google Classroom. It is important that all students report to Zoom on time Monday through Friday. Failure to do so will result in the student being marked as absent. Without an excused absence, the student will also be unable to receive credit for participation points that day.
In addition to being on time, it is required that students report to Zoom/Google:
- Dressed appropriately for school or activity (no PJ’s or clothing that would not be permitted at school)
- Have an appropriate background (neutral and clutter free)
- In a space where they can move and learn (at a desk/table/workout area)
- Have appropriate fitness supplies when needed. (highly modifiable to fit situation)
- With the video function on. If for any reason a student cannot use the video or has a valid reason not to use it, please email Coach Stewart
- With the student’s first initial and last name (Ex: R Stewart)
Any students not adhering to these guidelines will be removed from the class that day, will not be able to receive attendance or participation points for that class period and parents will be notified. If a student needs to leave class early for any reason, please make sure to contact Coach Ashleigh via email.
Grading Policy:
Students can earn up to 10 points per day/ 50 points per week based on the following criteria and breakdown:
- Zoom Attendance- On time, dressed and in an appropriate setting (3 points)
- Class Participation- Completion of QOTD/daily journal/ reflection/assessment and workout (activity) or Zoom class discussion or breakout groups (7 points).
- Points for activities can change. Some days will have more points assigned for the written work while other days will give more points for the activity. I will try to balance this out to reflect the amount of time/study needed for each day. They will still be worth 10 points total.
Due to the nature of remote learning, I understand that it can be difficult to balance the use of technology when sharing with other family members or relying on WIFI. As stated before, students will be prescribed classwork during this course that should and can be completed within that class period. This also means that journal assignments and workouts should be done and submitted by the end of each class period. If there is an extenuating circumstance that inhibits you from turning in or completing work on time, please contact me in advance (or as soon as you can) to receive a one week extension. After that date, late work will not be accepted.
Let’s make this year a GREAT year Nighthawks!
In Person education:
Physical Education
(Procedures and Rules)
Mr. Stewart
This important information will help you to understand the expectations for this year, and will give you the best chance of earning the highest grade possible. Please read carefully and ask about any item you might need clarified.
What to Wear
Uniform Tops and Bottoms - All students are expected to wear a Ironwood Ridge Physical Education uniform everyday. The preferred uniform can be purchased in the IRHS bookstore. They have the IRHS logo on both the shirt and shorts. This includes: shorts (grey), t-shirt (Blue), socks, and safe practical athletic shoes (sneakers/tennis shoes). No sandals, flip flops, boots, thick soled shoes or cleats. You can wear compression or spandex shorts/shirts under you P.E. uniform if you would like. If you do not dress out in your Physical Education uniform you may be able to participate in the clothes worn to school if we feel it will not be a safety issue. However, your grade will be affected as you are not dressing out in your Physical Education uniform.
We also recommend that when the colder days arrive all students have a sweatshirt, sweatpants, and or a jacket available. However, your Physical Education uniform needs to be worn underneath these warmer clothes. These “extra”’ items can all be kept in your Physical Education locker. We do go outside in the cooler weather!
A baseball cap or visors may be worn in class for sun protection. The cap/visor needs to be worn the way it was intended to be worn, with the bill of the cap forward. No other type or style of hat is permitted.
The waist band of your shorts needs to be at your waist and not at your hips or below. If a student is observed with shorts that are being sagged, he/she will be reminded to wear them properly and the daily grade will be reduced (refer to the grading policies discussed in class descriptions).
Uniforms that are torn or altered must be repaired or replaced. We strongly recommend that uniforms be taken home every weekend to be washed. Having two uniforms allows for one to be taken home and washed while the other remains at school for use.
Athletic shoes, whether they are sneakers or tennis shoes worn in class must be tied correctly, the “old fashion” way. The bow and knot are to be on the outside of the shoe and the laces pulled tight. The shoes worn in class are supposed to b e worn with the purpose of staying on your feet, providing support, protection and traction for the various activities that we do in class. Even though it is stylish to wear your shoes in a different manner it is unacceptable for Physical Education classes. Shoes not tied correctly will result in the loss of your dress out and possibly participation points for the day.
Jewelry - For your safety, as well as, for the safety of others, earrings (only stud earrings can be worn), bracelets, watches, and necklaces are not allowed to be worn to class. This includes jewelry in your lips, nose, eyebrows, etc. If seen, you will be asked to remove the jewelry. Removal of the jewelry is a must in order for you to participate.
Locks and Lockers - All students (P.E.) can be assigned a lock and locker. The locker usage fee is paid to the bookstore. We strongly recommend that getting a PE locker for use during class. Never give out your lock combinations to anyone. Sharing combinations is how many personal items and the locks themselves get lost or stolen. Students are not allowed to share a locker with another student. We will never give a student the combination to another student’s lock/locker
Lost/Stolen/Broken locks must be replaced at the cost of $7.00. Make sure the lock is locked before you leave the locker room. Once the lost lock fee is paid at the office, another lock will be issued.
Only Physical Education assigned locks may be used. If an unauthorized lock is found on a locker, the lock will be removed (cut off). Lost locks can be paid for in the main office ($7.00). When the reciept is brought to the PE department a new lock will be issued.
Grading
All students are graded daily. Grades will be entered into the Tyler system weekly or bi-weekly. Daily grades are based on the following criteria:
Attendance and Dressing Out
Students are expected to be on time to class. That means in the locker room by the time the late bell rings, and then at the attendance area at the prescribed time. The only exception would be a student who has an “excused” pass from a teacher/staff. A student will lose 5 points for each unexcused tardy. If the problem persists, further disciplinary action (lunch detention/administration referral) will be taken.
A student not having his/her physical education uniform at school may not be able to participate at all (it will depend on the activity). It is the student’s responsibility to be ready for this class just as any other class (be prepared!). We require uniforms to be worn for the safety, hygiene, and comfort of the student. Showing up to PE class with-out a uniform is akin to going to math class with-out a book or pencil.
If a student has a uniform that has been altered or torn, this will be treated the same as if he/she did not have his/her uniform at school. Any extenuating circumstances will be dealt with accordingly. Only the student’s last name should be written on the uniform in the space provided on the shirts and shorts.
Participation and Behavior
“Participation” means that a student gives their best effort in all activities, from the start of class through the end of the activity of the day. It also includes having a good attitude, staying on task, and following directions.
Absolutely no horseplay will be permitted in the locker room. Students are expected to enter the locker room, use good common sense, and get changed into their PE uniform. The awarding of behavior points will start as soon as you enter the locker room, and end when you leave the locker room at the end of the class period.
Appropriate language is expected in the locker room, as well as, during the activities we are doing. Students are expected to treat each other with respect. An old Cosby episode talked about use of indoor versus outdoor language, we are in a school setting so all language should be of the indoor type.
All students should be aware that poor behavior will adversely affect participation just as good behavior will greatly help the student participate fully.
If the teacher has to talk to a student regarding any distraction, disruption or, if the class must be stopped due to an issue involving a student’s behavior or lack of effort, that student can be assured he/she is losing points from their daily grade.
Tests and Written Work -
Written tests and work are given at the HS grade level(s). These tests and assignments primarily cover: exercise technique, anatomy, physiology, workout methodology, fitness principles, rules, strategies, and goal setting of the unit. All students will receive a handout on the activity we will be covering in class. The handout will be reviewed in class and this will contain the information needed for the test.
Personal Fitness Plan for Life Binder (points to vary with assignments/papers)
Students in Mr. Stewart's classes will be starting/continueing a Lifelong Fitness Binder. This binder will be a place to collect all PE handouts and to work on the Personal Plan outline. There will be three or more binder checks during the school year. YOU need a binder to store and organize your work and handouts recieved. A 1/2" to 1" binder should be sufficient.
It is hoped that the students will not only work on the outline during class time but instead add work to their binder through out their early adult life. This can become a nice Personal binder of information on health and fitness.
Miscellaneous
If a student needs to be excused from class due to an illness or injury, a written excuse (note/email) from a parent/guardian/doctor is needed. Non-participation for more than four days need a doctors excuse. The parent/guardian may be called for further clarification of the problem. If a student can still dress out and participate, even in a minimal way, we prefer this to not participating at all. Each case will be dealt with individually.
- Make up work may be required for excused absences/non-participation days.
- Make up work will not be given to students who chose to sit out the day with-out an admissible excuse.
- Make up work can be found in the course materials section of this website. There is a form for physical make up work and written assignments (alternative assignments).
Personal belonging kept in a student’s physical education locker should not include any glass containers or aerosols. This might be cologne/deodorant or perhaps something for another class. We ask that any glass containers that a student needs to carry be given to one of the teachers until the end of class. We do not want any broken glass on the locker room floor. We ask also that students do not use aerosol products anywhere on campus.
Heat related illnesses can often be prevented with proper hydration. Proper hydration means consuming water prior to the days activities, during the activities, and then another key is to hydrate at the end of an activity. All of our activity sites have water availible.
- each year several students whom did not participate in PE have been sent to the nurse for heat related illnesses. These students have not hydrated properly to just attend indoor classroom sessions. Imagine what we PE teachers are faced with when our students show up with-out properly hydrating themselves, and then are expected to perform in hot temperatures (This is Arizona!). We teachers will help by encouraging our students to drink water during our activities but it is the responsibility of students and parents to make sure the student is hydrated prior to and during school.
Do not bring cell phones to class. Portable music players may be brought to class when students are on individulized programs. Phones should be locked away in your locker. If there is a family emergency and your parents/guardians need to contact you, they may do so through the office.
The following quote is one of my personal favorites to discuss with students about the importance of education in their lives. I feel the statement is as true today as it was in the year 1822 -
“A popular Government, without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy; or, perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance: And a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”
James Madison, letter to W.T. Barry, August 4, 1822
