    Course Overview: REACH Honors English 9 is a rigorous course designed to prepare students for advanced coursework in honors and Advanced Placement courses.  The course offers a gifted approach to the English honors curriculum that develops literary analysis, metacognition, creativity, critical thinking, advanced composition, project-based learning, and discussion-based learning in an integrated thematic instruction model. A unique aspect of this course employs literary analysis through a variety of mediums, including print, film, TV, music, art and media as literary forms. The classroom is a student-centered environment in which students are encouraged to share their ideas about how they learn and process material with a variety of student outcomes. Students are expected to make a commitment to reading, screening, individual thinking, discussion, projects, and the writer’s process. Broadly speaking, the curriculum structure reflects:

    • REACH Honors English 9 is a weighted grade.
    • The REACH teacher collaborates with the REACH Honors English teacher:
      • REACH education workshops
      • Classroom support as determined with the REACH Honors English teacher
      • Student advocacy, mentorship, college & career readiness, SEL support
    • REACH Honors English 9 is an integrated thematic instruction model. The overarching theme of the class is: The Hero’s Journey: Facing the Unknown
      • Alternating quarters between film-as-literature’ for whole class study and independent reading from recommended literature list with mini-project AND literature circles for small group study and independent screening from a recommended film list with mini-project.
      • Gifted Tool Kit: daily and weekly lessons.
      • Targeted Writing Instruction 
      • Unit Projects
