Fun Facts:
- The United States Naval Academy trains young men and women to be officers of the U.S. Navy or Marine Corps. The school was founded in 1845.
- The campus, known as the Yard, was 10 acres when the school opened and is now 338 acres. The entire campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, building, and monuments.
- The original student body was 50 students and now has about 4,000 students each year.
- The Naval Academy first accepted women in 1976 and women are now about 20 percent of the student body.
- Candidates for admission must be between 17 and 22 years old and meet certain physical and educational qualifications. An applicant must obtain a nomination, generally from a congressman, to be considered for an appointment.
- Students are officers-in-training and are addressed Midshipman, an official military rank and pay grade. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for active duty service obligation upon graduation. Midshipmen at the Academy wear service dress uniforms similar to those of U.S. Navy officers.
- Midshipmen are not classified as freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors, but as fourth class, third class, second class, and first class.
- All students must play at least one sport each semester.
- Graduates receive a bachelor's degree and a commission as an ensign in the navy or as a second lieutenant in the marine corps.
- Over 50 U.S. astronauts (including six who flew to the Moon) have graduated from the Naval Academy.
- President Jimmy Carter is a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy.
- "Blue and Gold" is the name of the Naval Academy's Alma Mater. The song is sung at the conclusion of every sporting event, at the end of pep rallies, and at alumni gatherings.
